If Nick Lane is right, life didn't begin with genes or even cells but with a gradient: a difference in proton concentration across a thin mineral wall at the sea floor, alkaline fluid seeping up from the rock on one side, acidic carbon-dioxide-rich ocean pressing in on the other.
That natural battery, long before any enzyme existed to tend it, could drive carbon dioxide and hydrogen together into the first organic molecules along something close to the citric acid cycle run in reverse. What makes this more than a creation story is that every living thing still does it, pumping protons across a membrane and letting them fall back through a rotary motor to make energy -- a mechanism so universal and so old it reads less like an invention than like the thing life is.
The chemistry is a redox deal. The rock reacts with seawater and gives off hydrogen (H₂), which is desperate to hand off electrons, while the ocean's carbon dioxide (CO₂) is desperate to take them. Move the electrons across and CO₂ gets reduced a step at a time, first to formate, then on toward acetate, the first organic molecules. That reaction runs downhill, but it sits behind a high barrier, so it doesn't happen on its own in open water. The vent fixes both halves: iron-sulfur minerals in the wall catalyze it, the same iron-sulfur chemistry still buried inside our enzymes, and the proton gradient across the wall supplies the push.

Which leaves us in a strange spot. If our most fundamental truths live inside that gradient, it's at once the most important lever in biology and very nearly the last one you'd want to pull, because anything load-bearing enough to sit at the origin of life is load-bearing enough that yanking on it brings the whole structure down.
